The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the global Catholic community and the Vatican on the historic election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, taking the papal name of Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, 2025, following a conclave in Vatican City.

A statement released by CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh on Friday described the election of Pope Leo XIV as a “moment of renewal and hope” for the Catholic Church and the broader Christian community.

The statement reads in part: ”The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church.

”CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.

”CAN pray that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness.

“May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry.”

The New Diplomat reports that Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955, is a member of the Augustinian order and has a distinguished record of missionary work, particularly in Peru.

His election as the 267th pope follows the passing of Pope Francis.
