The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested prominent Nigerian socialite and businessman Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, for allegedly abusing the Naira.

It was gathered that the arrest is part of the EFCC’s ongoing campaign to enforce the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the misuse of the national currency, including spraying, mutilating, or hawking Naira notes.

The New Diplomat reports that this comes after the EFCC’s intensified crackdown on Naira abuse.

The anti-graft agency has arrested several others in recent months, targeting both celebrities and everyday citizens.

Below are some key cases:

Bobrisky (Idris Okuneye) – In April 2024, the controversial crossdresser was sentenced to six months in prison without the option of a fine for spraying Naira notes at a movie premiere in Lagos.

Cubana Chief Priest (Pascal Okechukwu) – The celebrity barman faced charges in April 2024 for Naira abuse but reached an out-of-court settlement with the EFCC, forfeiting N10 million.

Murja Kunya – A popular Kano-based TikTok influencer, Kunya was re-arrested in March 2025 after absconding from administrative bail. She was initially detained in January 2025 for spraying Naira notes at a hotel, violating the CBN Act.

Kelly Okungbowa (Ebo Stone) – An Edo State government official, Okungbowa was arrested in March 2025 following a viral video showing him spraying and mutilating Naira notes at a bar. He was suspended from his role as coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team.
