There was palpable apprehension on Saturday morning when a multi-storey structure located on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger axis of Lagos State collapsed, trapping an unspecified number of people beneath the debris.

The ill-fated building, said to be under construction, also housed the well-known EqualRight Restaurant.

According to eyewitness accounts, the collapse occurred at approximately 8 am, catching occupants and passersby unawares.

While the cause of the collapse was yet to be ascertained as of press time, there are reports that the building had been showing signs of distress before the incident.

“Anyone who knows that building should know that it was a bomb waiting to explode. I hardly go there to buy food because I was always scared the building would collapse while I’m there.

“Right now, we cannot ascertain how many people are trapped under the rubbles, but emergency responders have begun rescue operations”, a source was quoted by Punch to have said.

Meanwhile, operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency have arrived at the location and begun rescue operations while they await other government agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, concerned residents in the neighborhood were seen milling around the scene of the incident, anxiously awaiting updates on the fate of those trapped inside.
