The Nigerian Presidency has firmly debunked circulating rumours suggesting that Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been sacked.

Labelling the reports as “fake news,” the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, urged the public to disregard the unfounded speculation making rounds on social media and other platforms.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 7, 2025, Ogra, clarified that no such decision has been made regarding Yakubu’s tenure.

“The INEC Chairman remains in office, and any official announcement concerning his position would come directly from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or another authorized channel,” Ogra stated.

He emphasized that the rumours lack credibility and cautioned against the spread of misinformation.

The rebuttal follows a wave of claims alleging that Yakubu had been replaced, with some reports naming a supposed successor.
