In a heartbreaking turn of events, the boxing world is mourning the loss of Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, a celebrated Nigerian boxer who tragically slumped and died during a match in Ghana on Saturday, March 29, 2025.
This has triggered concerns across the boxing world with some providing insights as to how the late boxer suddenly collapsed and passed away.
Olanrewaju, a 40-year-old former National and West African light-heavyweight champion was competing against Ghanaian fighter Jon “Power” Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League when the incident occurred.
According to reports, Olanrewaju was holding his own in the scheduled eight-round undercard bout, with only 15 seconds remaining in the third round, when he suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed in the ring.
Despite immediate efforts by medical personnel to revive him, the seasoned fighter could not be saved, leaving spectators, fellow athletes, and fans in shock.
Preliminary accounts suggest the cause of death may have been a cardiac arrest, though an official statement from the Ghana Boxing Authority is still awaited.
