The Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved to contain the sweeping wave of defection rocking the party.

This is as the party summoned an emergency meeting with political aides to the governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori.

This is coming amid unrelenting defections to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) by prominent PDP members in the state.

Roughly over 5,000 PDP members, including Senator Ned Nwoko, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, former House of Representatives member Nicholas Ossai, Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru, former Commissioner Chika Ossai, and Dr Chris Okobah, recently dumped the party for the APC, citing internal crises and accusing the governor of high-handedness.

The New Diplomat also gathered some of the governor’s key allies, particularly those instrumental in his 2023 election victory, are also considering leaving the party.

This speculation prompted the PDP leadership to convene the meeting in a bid to contain the situation.

In a statement on Wednesday in Asaba, the state PDP chairman, Solomon Areyinka, directed all political aides to the governor to attend the meeting scheduled for Thursday at the party’s secretariat.

“The PDP Delta State Chapter has invited the Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, and other political aides to an interactive session to discuss critical party matters,” the statement read.

“The meeting, which will involve the State Party Chairman and members of the State Working Committee, is compulsory for all Executive Assistants, Senior Special Assistants, and Special Assistants on Political Matters to the Governor.”

The meeting is scheduled for noon on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at the PDP State Secretariat in Asaba.
