The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he has resumed his role as the Speaker of Lagos state legislative body.

The announcement came on Thursday, February 27, 2025, when Obasa returned to the assembly complex, accompanied by s retinue of police and State Security Service personnel.

The New Diplomat reports that this marked his first appearance at the assembly since his removal from the position on January 13, 2025, a move that sparked significant political tension in Lagos.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday in the Lagos Assembly Complex, Obasa stated that: “I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly.”

Asked whether he has been reinstated as speaker, Obasa added: “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional but in doing that, you must follow the due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.”

Obasa’s return follows a period of turmoil within the assembly, where over 90 per cent of the lawmakers had accused him of poor leadership, habitual tardiness, high-handedness, and abuse of office, among other grievances.

His ousting earlier in the year was said to be a dramatic shift.

However, Obasa has maintained that the process purportedly leading to his removal did not follow due procedure, a stance he reiterated in late January.

The development followed the withdrawal of the security aides of the embattled Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
