The United States has agreed to pause tariffs on Mexico for one month following negotiations between US President Donald Trump and Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The decision was made after Sheinbaum agreed to reinforce the US-Mexico border with 10,000 National Guard troops to combat drug trafficking, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigration.

This was made known by Sheinbaum, who took to her official X handle to announce the details of her conversation with Trump.

She stated: “We had a good conversation with President Trump with much respect for our relationship and sovereignty.

“Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 National Guard troops to prevent drug trafficking from Mexico to the United States, particularly fentanyl.

“The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”

Also, US President confirmed the development in a separate statement posted in his social media.

Trump said his talks with the Mexican leader had been “very friendly.” The two countries will negotiate during one period, he added.

The New Diplomat reports that this comes after Trump had declared sweeping tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China because of what he described as a “major threat” from illegal immigration and drugs, prompting Sheinbaum to vow retaliation.
