  • Tinubu: “Useni Was A Man of Courage and Dedication”
  • Mark: “Useni Was A Leader, He Would Be Greatly Missed”

By Abiola Olawale

Tributes have started to pour in for Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who passed away at the age of 82.

Useni, a retired army General, died on Thursday after suffering a brief illness.

Useni, who was at various times saddled with varied top roles during his military career, including being governor of Bendel State, transitioned to politics after retiring from the military.

He was elected senator representing Plateau South senatorial district in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a heartfelt condolence statement released on Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu honored Useni, hailing him as a figure of remarkable courage and unwavering dedication. He emphasized how Useni’s exemplary character served as an inspiration to younger officers, encouraging them to put the interests of the nation above their own.

The president extended condolences to the late General’s family, friends, military colleagues, and political associates, highlighting his contributions both as a soldier and a politician.

The statement reads in part: “The President states that the late Useni also made some difference in politics as deputy national chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District.

“The President prays that God Almighty will grant Lieutenant-General Useni’s soul eternal rest and solace for his family.”

Also, a former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has mourned the passing of Useni, describing his death as the exit of a hero.

Mark, in his condolence message issued by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, described Useni as a remarkably distinguished officer, adding that embodied the qualities of a true gentleman.

He said: “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of General Useni.

“My heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, colleagues, government, and people of Plateau State and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

“General Useni was a gallant soldier and a pragmatic politician who served the nation with honor and dignity.

“His selfless services, bravery, and leadership will forever be remembered and honored.”

The New Diplomat reports that Useni was the military governor of old Bendel State under General Muhammadu Buhari in 1984.

He was the transport minister and later the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
