History was made at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday following the swearing-in of Hon Mojisola Meranda as the first female Speaker of the legislative body.

Meranda took her oath of office after the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday during a plenary session.

Taking her oath of office, Meranda said, “I affirm that I will be faithful as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; that I will perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Political Role

Meranda has served in various capacities within the Lagos State House of Assembly. She was the Chief Whip in the ninth Assembly and subsequently became the Deputy Speaker in the tenth Assembly. She was also elected as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2025, following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, who had been the speaker since 2015.

She attended Randle Primary School, Lagos State, 1986-1992; she also attended two secondary schools, Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School (1992-1996) and Ansar-ud-deen Secondary School (1996 -1998).

She earned a BSC (HONS) in Public Administration (2012/2013) from Lagos State University (LASU).
