The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a Catholic priest identified as Rev. Father Joseph Enyinaya, over an alleged shooting of a teenage boy during a New Year’s Mass on January 1, 2025.

The incident reportedly took place at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, of Imo State.

According to a press statement issued by the Imo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the alleged shooting happened after the teenage boy was said to have set off a firecracker, commonly known as a ‘banger’ or ‘knockout’, within the church premises.

The priest was alleged to have drawn a revolver and shot the boy.

Okoye added that the police have recovered the teenager’s body, which has been taken to Atta Ikeduru Mortuary for further examination.

He also added that the police have initiated an in-depth investigation to uncover all the details of the event.
