The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Christopher Musa has given updates on the arrest of a self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Simon Ekpa in Finland.

Musa confirmed that the Federal Government has already filed all necessary documents to request for the extradition of Ekpa to Nigeria.

The New Diplomat reports that Ekpa was arrested by Finland law enforcement on November 21.

Giving updates on the circumstances, Musa who spoke on Channels Television’s 2024 year-end review programme, said although the government is happy with Ekpa’s arrest in Finland, they have begun a process to extradite him to face charges in Nigeria.

He stated: “Well, I’m sure he is cooling off somewhere. Legal action is going to be taken accordingly. I don’t want to say much about that, but I’m happy he has been arrested.

“The Federal Government has actually forwarded most of the requirements to the Finnish Government. So, I’m sure the right thing will be done.”

It would be recalled that Ekpa, a dual citizen of Nigeria and Finland, was arrested on November 21 by Finnish law enforcement and subsequently remanded in custody by the district court of Päijät-Häme.

He faces allegations of allegedly “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media,” a crime he is accused of committing in 2021 in Lahti, Finland.

He is currently held in custody until his upcoming trial, scheduled to begin on May 2025.
