On this poignant day, December 28, 2024, we gather in heartfelt unity to pay tribute to a true titan of our beloved land, a luminous embodiment of patriotism and an unwavering pillar of integrity, the revered Akparawa (Comrade) Amah T. Amah. As we lay his earthly form to rest in the tranquil embrace of Ikot Iko Ibom, ONNA, our hearts are heavy with grief, yet brimming with gratitude for the profound legacy he has bequeathed to us.
More than just a man, Akparawa Amah was a spark of inspiration and one of the twelve extraordinary visionaries whose selfless patriotism and love for Ibibioland ignited a powerful movement on that significant day, August 1, 1987, at No. 7 Bonny Street in Calabar. This moment forever echoed in our history, giving birth to the cherished Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio. His passion was contagious, and his vision was crystal clear as he tirelessly championed the essence of our Ibibio identity, igniting a fire within us all to dream boldly of a flourishing homeland.
Reflecting on my early days as a student at the prestigious University of Calabar, I am transported back to the indelible mark Comrade Amah T., as was popularly known then, etched upon my life and the lives of countless others. He was not just a Student Union President; he was a living testament to resilience and strength, the very embodiment of ‘malabitic’ courage. With an unwavering commitment to justice and student welfare, he stood tall against mediocrity, rallying his peers with a passion that was utterly impossible to resist. He was indeed A GREAT MALABITE, as students and graduates of the foremost citadel of knowledge are known!
When I took office as the International President of Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio in 2022, I felt an immense honour in bestowing the title of “Legendary Ancestors” upon these our band of twelve visionary leaders. Akparawa Amah perfectly personifies this title—his wisdom, courage, and foresight continue to light our way today. It is through the tireless efforts of such remarkable statesmen that we can proudly celebrate our heritage.
The passing of Akparawa Amah leaves a profound void not only within the heart of the Ibibio Nation but also across Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and the world at large. His steadfast belief in the power of unity, self-advocacy, and genuine representation will resonate in our souls for eternity. Though he may have departed from our physical realm, the ideals he championed and the unwavering spirit he embodied will continue to inspire generations to come.
Adieu Akparawa (Comrade) Amah T. Amah
