The Lagos State Police Command has disclosed the release of protesters arrested in the state during the 4th anniversary of the #EndSARS protests that rocked the country in October 2020.

It would be recalled that on Sunday, several protesters who stormed the Lekki tollgate area of Lagos State were arrested by some operatives of the police force.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on his X handle, said the protesters had been released.

He said the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state, Mr Olanrewaju Ishola, ordered the release of all detained persons in connection with #ENDSARS 4th anniversary at Lekki-Tollgate on Sunday.

Hundeyin, however, did not mention how many persons were detained.
He said: “All protesters in our custody have been released.

“CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on the ground at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), to personally see to that.”

The New Diplomat reports that on 8 October 2020, Nigerians had taken to the streets protesting alleged atrocities by the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which was a unit of the Nigeria Police Force(NPF) established to fight violent crimes.

On 20 October 2020, at least 12 peaceful protesters were allegedly killed in Alausa and Lekki Lagos by security operatives. At least 56 people allegedly died across the country during the protests.
