The political turmoil in Rivers State has continued to escalate, leading to palpable tension and panic in the State.

This is as a section of the Eleme Local Government Council secretariat has been reportedly set ablaze.

The newly elected chairman of the Eleme Local Government Area, Brain Gokpa confirmed this to the press on Monday.

Gokpa explained that he discovered that a few of the buildings in the council had been set ablaze when he came to the council secretariat accompanied by his councillors.

He also explained that the cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be determined, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

The New Diplomat reports that this is coming after Rivers State residents went to the poll to vote for local government chairmen of their choice.

It would also be recalled that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), following the conclusion of the election, declared that the Action Peoples Party (APP) had won a total of 22 Local chairmanship seats while the Action Alliance (AA) won the remaining one.

Following the declaration, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State swore in the newly elected Chairmen on Sunday.
