Nasarawa State is set to hold its local government elections on Saturday, 2nd November 2024, according to the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC).

The announcement was made by NASIEC Chairman Ayuba Wandai-Usman during a press briefing in Lafia on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024.

The elections, covering both chairmanship and councillorship positions, will take place across the state’s 13 local government areas.

It would be recalled that the last local government elections in Nasarawa were held in October 2021, with elected officials serving a three-year term, which is now coming to an end.

During the press briefing, Wandai-Usman reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process, emphasizing the vital role of media collaboration.

He said: “The chairmanship and councillorship elections will be held on Saturday, 2nd November 2024. Nomination papers for the elections are to be submitted at the commission’s headquarters, Democracy House, Shendam Road, Lafia.”

He further disclosed the election timeline, mentioning that party primaries would begin on Friday, 11th October 2024, and political campaigns are scheduled to commence on Friday, 18th October 2024.

The publication of the final list of candidates is slated for Tuesday, 29th October 2024.

Wandai-Usman also urged Nasarawa citizens to support the commission by turning out in large numbers to participate in the elections.

He appealed to residents to maintain peace and order before, during, and after the polls. “Everyone must act responsibly to ensure a smooth and peaceful election,” he stressed.

This election marks another opportunity for Nasarawa State to further strengthen its democratic structures at the grassroots level.
