As calls for a nationwide protest gather momentum, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced the deployment of its personnel to man strategic locations in the nation’s capital.

The New Diplomat reports that this is coming on the heels of moves by some Nigerians who have vowed to hit the streets on the country’s Independent Day, October 1, in disapproval of the current economic situation and hardship in the country

According to the organisers, the October 1 demonstration is a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protest, which took place from August 1 to 10.

The group explained that the FCT protest would be held at Eagle Square, the same venue as the Independence Day parade, while the Lagos protest would take place at the Ikeja Under Bridge.

Meanwhile, a statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Monday said personnel have been deployed to several parts of the nation’s capital.

Adah said deployments are aimed at ensuring that residents of the FCT enjoy a hitch-free Independence Day celebration.

The statement added that the deployment will include Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel, anti-riot equipment, and visibility policing, among others.

The statement further added that traffic diversions will be implemented in areas expected to experience large crowds, including Central Area and Eagle Square.

While celebrating Independence Day, the police said it is encouraging the FCT residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or activities to the FCT Police.
