The Federal Government has revealed that it has commenced the payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage on Thursday, September 26, 2024.

The spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, made this revelation during an interview on Thursday.

He assured that workers will start receiving alerts for their new salary payments from Thursday.

He said: “Federal Government civil servants will start getting the new minimum wage from today(Thursday) this September 2024. What I can tell you is that the minimum wage salary payment is today I am not sure of the arrears.”

The New Diplomat reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in July approved N70,000 as the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers following months-long talks with organised labour.

The Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage had said civil servants across Nigeria would see their salaries adjusted following the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Also, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission had stated that the payment of the new minimum wage will commence from July 2024.

The NSIWC Chairman, Ekpo Nta, said this during a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja.

He explained that this was because the date in question was when the President approved the bill after the National Assembly passed it.
