The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has commended the governor-elect of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their success in the recently concluded Edo State gubernatorial election.

The meeting, chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was marked by expressions of joy and acknowledgement of the party’s significant achievement after an eight-years of the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, during the meeting said APC recorded a “fantastic outing”.

He stated: “We want to use this opportunity, Mr Chairman, to congratulate the people of Edo State, particularly the APC family, properly guided by the … father of the APC, in their fantastic outing, recording a huge victory, which had eluded the APC for over eight years.

“The election has been adjudged to be free and fair and that is what Mr. President has always stood for. We want to thank you, Mr. President, for being committed to the electoral process and ethos of democracy.”

The New Diplomat reports that Okpebholo polled a total of 291,667 to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 247,274 votes and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who garnered 22,763 votes

A breakdown of the results shows that the APC won a total of 11 local governments against the PDP, who won 7 local government areas, respectively.

In another development, the FEC observed a minute silence in memory of late Mrs Salome Audu Jankada, a former Minister of Women’s Affairs and Youth Development, who passed away on August 27, 2024.

While announcing the passing away of the former Minister, Akume said: “Mr. Chairman, we want to announce the demise of a former member of the Federal Executive Council, Mrs. Salome Audu Jankada… she was Minister of Women Affairs and Youth Development.”
