Popular human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore has regained his freedom a few hours after he was reportedly arrested on Sunday.
Sowore was said to have been reportedly arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.
According to reports, Sowore was arrested after his flight arrived in Lagos at around 9.43 WAT.
He was said to have been immediately detained in the custody of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
However, the activist has regained his freedom.
Sowore made this known on his official X handle.
He wrote: “I have just been released by the Nigerian Immigration after a brief detention and my passport released back to me.’’
It would be recalled that Sowore was initially arrested by DSS operatives on August 3, 2019. The arrest came two days before a reported planned #RevolutionNow protest tagged “Days of Rage,” convened by the pro-democracy activist and slated for August 5, 2019.
Following his arrest, he was arraigned by the DSS on several occasions and was later released following sustained pressure.
It would be recalled also that on February 15, 2024, the President Bola Tinubu led-Federal Government expressed its intention to discontinue the treasonable felony case instituted against Mr Sowore and co-defendant, Olawale Bakare aka Mandate, who had both been in and out of court over a lawsuit instituted by the outgone administration of Muhammadu Buhari.
He left the country not long after to the United States of America to reunite with his family.
