The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed the arrest of its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, roaring that the action amounts to an assault on Nigerian workers.

The union disclosed that Ajaero was apprehended by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the early hours of Monday.

According to a terse statement released by the NLC, Ajaero was arrested by the DSS on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, and he is now detained at the office of the National Security Agency (NSA).

The union described the arrest as an assault on the Nigerian workers.

The statement reads in part: “The assault on Nigerian workers continues. President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of DSS at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport Abuja this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of TUC United Kingdom, and he is now detained at the office of the NSA.”

Ajaero’s arrest comes after he was summoned and interrogated by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) over allegations bordering on terrorism financing.

It would be recalled that the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), an arm of the NPF, on August 29, 2024, had reportedly quizzed the NLC boss on alleged terrorism and felony allegations.
