Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s performance in the upcoming 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Awoniyi emphasized the importance of starting the tournament on a positive note and expressed confidence in his team’s ability to excel.

Awoniyi, who is returning to the national team after an injury that sidelined him during Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, shared his excitement about rejoining his teammates. He stressed that every player called up for the qualifiers deserves their place and is eager to give their best for the country.

Ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic, Awoniyi remarked on the pride associated with representing the Super Eagles and the determination to win every game in Africa. He also acknowledged that competition within the team is tough due to the depth of talent, but he remains focused on earning more playing time.

The Super Eagles are set to face Rwanda on September 10 in another AFCON qualifying match in Kigali.
