The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has screened and cleared Wale Adedayo, sacked chairman of the Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun state, to contest in its upcoming primary election for Local Council chairmanship role.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Ogun PDP, publicity secretary, Afolabi Orekoya.

Orekoya said Adedayo, a top flight journalist and politician has been given the thumbs up to contest the PDP chairmanship primary elections scheduled for Saturday, September 7.

The statement reads in part: “Hundreds of aspirants from the 236 Wards and 20 Local Governments of Ogun State obtained the party’s nomination forms and were screened for eligibility to contest in the Local Government Elections coming up in November.

“Among the aspirants screened at the Party Secretariat in Abeokuta was the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Chief Wale Adedayo who is recontesting for the Chairmanship position in Ijebu East Local Government.

“The party has scheduled Thursday, 5th, and Saturday, 7th September as respective dates for the Councillorship and Chairmanship Primary Elections across the 236 Wards and 20 LGs.

“The members of the party should go out peacefully for the primaries in their various wards to elect the councillors and chairmanship candidates of their choice”.

The New Diplomat reports that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) had announced that the local government polls in the state would be held on November 16.

Adedayo, who is seeking to reclaim his position, was suspended in August 2023 over allegations of maladministration and financial mismanagement. But to many the real issue what that he challenged the state authorities including the governor on the imperative of maintaining financial autonomy for local government councils in Ogun state. This, according to many, did not go down well with Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Adedayo was subsequently impeached by the councillors in the LGA in September 2023.
