A former Nigerian international soccer star, Etim Esin has weighed in on the ongoing transfer saga involving Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen.

Esin attributed the delay to off-field controversies, including Osimhen’s public criticism of former Super Eagles assistant coach Finidi George. He urged the 25-year-old forward to learn from his own personal experiences.

It would be recalled that in June, Osimhen made headlines for his live video outburst against Finidi, sparking controversy. Despite being the reigning African Footballer of the Year and attracting interest from top clubs, Napoli has yet to finalize a transfer for the €130 million-rated player, with only 10 days remaining in the summer transfer window.

During an interview with Elegbete TV, Esin, regarded as one of Nigeria’s most talented former players, expressed his concerns about the situation. He believes the transfer should have been straightforward given Osimhen’s reputation.

“A coach can make or break you when it comes to indiscipline. I know this from experience,” Esin told Elegbete TV. “You haven’t played in a World Cup or won the AFCON. Yes, you’ve won African Footballer of the Year, but this behavior isn’t helping. Look at all the complications with your transfer now. They’re talking about a swap deal—what African Footballer of the Year has been part of a swap deal? Players like Yekini, Amuneke, and Ikpeba were signed directly.”

Esin advised Osimhen to learn from his own past error and avoid mistakes that could harm his career. “Indiscipline cost me a lot in football, and I thank God it didn’t cost me my life,” he said.

He also urged Osimhen to focus on giving back to his community in Lagos. “Go back to where you’re from and build an Academy. Help raise the next generation. If football isn’t their path, provide scholarships. That’s what his team should be advising him to do, not flaunting connections with music stars. I’ve been there, and it’s a distraction.”

Esin concluded by stressing that Osimhen’s transfer should have been finalized by now, given the approaching deadline.
