The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is currently holding an emergency meeting over a recent invitation of its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

It was gathered that the NEC meeting began around 8 am with several stakeholders present.

The union had sent a notice to all heads of affiliates and state chapters of NLC, notifying them of the scheduled meeting hours after Ajaero was invited by Police over allegations bordering on terrorism financing.

The notice of the meeting entitled, “Notice of emergency National Executive Council meeting,” was signed by the NLC’s Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja.

The notice reads in part: “I bring you fraternal greetings from the congress headquarters.

“You are invited to the emergency National Executive Council Hybrid meeting scheduled as follows:Tuesday, August 20, 2024; 8 am
Olaitan Oyerinde Hall, Labour House.”

The New Diplomat reports that this is coming on the heels of Ajaero’s invitation by the police over alleged charges of “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, reasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime”.

The letter of invitation, dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Mu’azu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police Intelligence, said Ajaero’s name was mentioned in ongoing investigations connected to alleged “criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime”.

It would be recalled that Ajaero’s invitation is coming after NLC raised an alarm over an alleged invasion of its headquarters in Abuja.

However, the police denied ever invading the headquarters of the NLC, saying its operatives performed a lawful operation.

It would be recalled that during a press conference in Abuja last Thursday, NLC leaders rejected the police explanation of the raid saga and demanded an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals.
