Amidst growing concerns over a planned nationwide protest, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the organizers to abandon their demand for President Bola Tinubu to scrap the 1999 Constitution, labeling it an unrealistic expectation.
During a closed-door meeting with the Forum of APC State Chairmen in Abuja, the party’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, emphasized that Tinubu does not have the authority to unilaterally alter or discard the 1999 Constitution. Basiru pointed out that many of the protesters demands involve political issues, processes and constitutional amendments, which are not appropriate subjects that warrant a national protest.
“The renewed agitation to have the President dump the constitution he vowed to protect would amount to a mission impossible,” said Basiru.
He added:” President Tinubu alone lacks the power to dump or alter the 1999 Constitution in any form.”
Basiru , the APC National scribe further explained that the National Working Committee of the party reviewed the fifteen charter of demands from the protesters and concluded that most of the issues raised are not suitable for protest as they pertain to political matters and constitutional amendments.
The New Diplomat reports that the proposed nationwide protests have been gaining traction on social media.
It is scheduled to be held across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, in August.
The protest is said to be against the economic hardship and the prices of food and basic commodities which have gone through the roof in the last months.
However, Tinubu, governors and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have appealed to Nigerians to shelve the planned protest slated for next month.
