The President of the United States, Joe Biden, despite previously expressing his intention to run for re-election in the 2024 Presidential election, has formally reversed his decision, announcing the termination of his candidacy.

The president of the United States said the decision was reached in the best interest of his party, the Democrats and the citizens of the US in general.

The American President made this known in a letter posted on his social media account on Sunday.

In the post, Biden also appreciated the citizens of the US for their support, saying it was the greatest honour of his life to serve as president.

The letter reads in part: “And while I have intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term.

“And let me express my heartfelt appreciation for the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me.

“I believe today and always have: that there is nothing America can’t do – when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America.”

The New Diplomat reports that Biden’s withdrawal comes just four months before Americans go to the polls to elect a new president.

This also comes after intense pressure from the US President’s fellow Democrats after a faltering debate performance against Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump at the end of last month.

It would be recalled that concerns have been emerging that the 81-year-old president might be too old to serve another four years following his not quite impressive debate performance last month, and his uneven public appearances since then.
