Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced the appointment of three second-class emirs.
The Governor, in a statement issued by his Director General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, said he has approved the appointment of the second-class emirs of Gaya, Karaye and Rano Emirates, respectively.
The deposed emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir Gaya, was reinstated as emir of Gaya.
Also, Alhaji Muhammad Mahraz Karaye has been appointed as Emir of Karawhile while Alhaji Muhammad Isa Umar was appointed as Emir of Rano.
Speaking after the signing ceremony, the governor emphasised the significance of the law in the entire Emirates system: “This law is vital in sustaining the rich cultural values and norms of our people. It will also bridge the gap between the grassroots and the government.
“The Rano Emirate consists of Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Local Government Areas. Gaya Emirate consists of Gaya, Albasu, and Ajingi Local Government Areas while Karaye Emirate consists of Karaye and Rogo Local Government Areas.”
According to the governor, these councils will have powers to advise the Emir of Kano on matters relating to the maintenance of public order and boundary disputes within their jurisdictions.
He added that the jurisdiction of the second-class emirates will be limited to their respective local government areas.
These appointments which he said took effect immediately will expectedly see the new emirates serving as second with Kano as first-class emirate.
The New Diplomat reports that the development is coming after Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council Establishment Bill 2024 into law.
The Kano State House of Assembly had passed a bill establishing second-class Emirate Councils in Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.
According to the lawmakers, the legislation aims to bridge the gap between the grassroots and the government while sustaining the rich cultural values and norms of the people.
This also comes amid the Emirship tussle that has rocked the throne of the Emir of Kano.
It would be recalled that Kano State has been witnessing massive games of thrones after Governor Yusuf signed some changes in the Kano State Emirate Council Bill into Law 2024.
The newly- signed law dissolved four new Emirates in the State and restored Kano Emirate to its pre-2019 status on Thursday, May 23.
Yusuf also issued a reappointment letter to Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II on Friday, May 24, as the new Emir of Kano, and ordered the Emirs affected by the new law to vacate their palaces within 48 hours.
