There is anxiety at the Federal College of Education, Technical, Akoka, Lagos, as the college Deputy Registrar, Chris Olamiju, was reportedly kidnapped from his official residence on Thursday.

It was reported that Olamiju was whisked away by some yet-to be identified gunmen who allegedly broke into his house.

Throwing light on the matter, an unnamed source claimed that the Deputy Registrar had been a leading figure of a protest that was organised by the academic and non-academic staff against the continued tenure of the College Provost Dr. Wahab Azeez.

It would be recalled that the institution has been in disarray since May 27 due to sharp disagreements between the provost and the institution’s personnel regarding Dr. Azeez’s tenure status. Azeez was first appointed in May 2019 for a four-year term and then reappointed again in May 2023.

However, a new law that President Bola Tinubu approved in June restricts provosts to a single five-year tenure.

Azeez however contended that the new law does not apply to him, but the employees insist that Azeez’s employment should terminate because it began in 2019.

The tenure dispute and further accusations made by both parties are presently being looked into by the college’s Governing Council.
