- Says New Ministry Will Stop Farmers-Herders Clash
By Abiola Olawale
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday announced his approval for the creation of a new ministry, the Ministry of Livestock Development.
Tinubu made this announcement during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope livestock reform implementation committee at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday.
The committee is mandated to provide sector-focused solutions to address the age-long farmers-herders crisis.
While the president didn’t reveal the name of the minister of the newly created Ministry, it is expected that he will forward the name to the Senate for screening and confirmation if it’s a new nominee.
Present at the Inauguration were the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, amongst cabinet members.
The New Diplomat reports that this after the National Livestock Reforms Committee in a report submitted in September 2023 recommended that Tinubu should create a “Ministry of Livestock Resources” to, among other deliverables, reduce the decades-long gory conflict between farmers and nomadic cattle herders nationwide.
