Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has said that he never discussed anything concerning the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu during his recent meeting with the South-East governors and lawmakers.
The former Nigerian president explained that both he and erstwhile Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, met with the South East governors to discuss pressing issues of development, adding that at no time was the subject matter of Nnamdi Kanu on either the agenda of the meeting nor was it ever discussed.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday on behalf of Obasanjo, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, Special Assistant on Media to the former president, reiterated that the topic of Kanu’s freedom was not part of what Obasanjo and Chief Emeka Anyaoku had talked about in their last private meeting with the South East governors in Enugu State, on Tuesday.
Akinyemi stated that the major issues discussed were around regional development topics such as security, infrastructure, and other socioeconomic issues which were in agreement with the national economic development agenda.
Akinyemi also added, quoting Obasanjo directly, “The meeting with them was at my invitation and Chief Emeka Anyaoku before their summit begins.
“The issue of Nnamdi Kanu was not on the agenda and was not discussed in my presence.”
It would be recalled that there have been media reports that the South-Eastern lawmakers and governors convened a meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
