  • FCT Police Command Launches Investigation

By Tolúlopé Olátúnjí

Reactions continue to trail the killing of Disc Jockey (DJ) Bashiru Dauda, popularly known as DJ Bash, during a robbery that occurred on Friday, 14 June, 2024 at Volcano Peak Court Hotel in Gwarimpa, Abuja, as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident.

A resident identified simply as Sani, who witnessed the incident, expressed the community’s growing anxiety over the increasing frequency of armed robberies in the area.

Sani explained:”In the early hours of Friday, some armed robbers attacked Volcano Peak Court Hotel in Gwarinpa. They robbed some guests in the hotel and took away their belongings, including money and phones.”

“A DJ was shot and died at the hospital in Jabi. We have been experiencing a series of armed robbery incidents in Gwarinpa recently, and this particular one has heightened fears among residents.” he added

Meanwhile, the incident has also garnered significant attention on social media. A user on X (formerly Twitter), Kidbold, posted, “A club in Gwarimpa, Abuja was attacked in the early hours of this morning by gunmen and a DJ I know was killed. There’s a police station not far from the place.”

Another user, Man Lucke, commented, “OMG. Volcano is one of my favorite spots in Gwarinpa. Before we go far by blaming the Nigerian police force, the question is what happened to Volcano’s internal security guys? They have a lot of questions to answer about how the attackers came in and killed the DJ without getting caught.”

Similarly, Alhaji Ragnar lamented, “Volcano is situated less than 500 meters from a house being watched by the military. You can’t go there without seeing over four military guys. Gwarinpa police station is less than 2 kilometers away. How come they operated freely like that?”

However, the FCT Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident. In a statement issued by FCT Police Command spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, it was noted, “On Friday, June 15, 2024, at about 05:07 a.m., a distress call was received by the FCT Police Command reporting a robbery incident at Volcano Peak Court Hotel, 4th Avenue, around 03:35 a.m.”

“Operatives from Gwarimpa Police Division immediately deployed to the scene, secured the premises, and discovered that one Bashir Dauda had been shot by the attackers. The victim was quickly rushed to Federal Medical Center Jabi, where doctors on duty confirmed him dead. The corpse was released on the request of the family to be buried according to Islamic rites,” the statement explained.

The police assured the public that an investigation is ongoing to apprehend the culprits and promised to provide further updates as the case progresses. SP Adeh urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police for a swift response.

Attempts to reach the hotel’s management for comment were unsuccessful, as calls to the phone number listed on its website went unanswered.
