Malawi Vice President, Saulos Chilima, alongside nine others, have been confirmed dead.

This comes after the military plane carrying the Malawi’s vice president and nine others mysteriously went missing on Monday.

Confirming an update on Tuesday, Malawi’s president Lazarus Chakwera, said the wreck of a plane carrying the Malawi’s Vice President and nine others has been found with no survivors.

In a news briefing on Tuesday, President Chakwera said the rescue team deployed to find the vice president found the aircraft completely destroyed.

Chakwera said he was “deeply saddened and sorry” to inform Malawians of the tragedy.

The President who paid tribute to Chilima, described him as “a good man”, “devoted father” and “formidable VP”.

“I consider it one of the great honours of my life to have had him as a deputy and as a counsellor,” he added.

The New Diplomat reports that this tragedy comes a few weeks after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passed away in a helicopter crash that occurred on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
