Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, has hit back at critics who accused him of misusing public funds to watch a football match abroad.

After sharing photos and videos of his attendance at the Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund final of the UEFA Champions League at the Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday, a critic alleged that he had spent taxpayers’ money on the trip.

Wahab strongly denied the claim, calling it an insult to imply that he, a high-ranking official appointed by the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, couldn’t afford to cover his own travel expenses.

He emphasized that his personal finances were more than sufficient to fund his trip.

According to reports, the critic who took to social media platform X wrote, “Lagosians’ tax payers’ money is working.”

Responding to this, Wahab wrote that before entering public service, he had been a lawyer for over thirty years.

He wrote: “I was a successful lawyer of over 3 decades before getting into public service.

“I have been a fan of Real Madrid FC for more than 30 years and I have been watching all their matches live at the stadium or live at home consistently for same period. I wasn’t poor neither am I poor. Get this poor mentality off your head. Enjoy your life when you can. All works and no play makes you dull!”
