The Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, Hashimu Dungurawa, has refuted viral reports claiming that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had initiated an investigation into former Kano State Governor, Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.

Dungurawa, in a statement issued on Friday, May 31, described the allegations as a mere rumour, “which is untrue and baseless.”

On Thursday, May 30, reports emerged that the EFCC reportedly initiated an investigation into the former governor’s alleged N2.5bn fraud.

According to reports, the anti-graft agency is looking into an alleged misappropriation of the NNPP campaign funds for the 2023 elections.

A source claiming to be privy to the matter, said Kwankwaso’s led “National Working Committee” was accused of refusing to pay party agents that worked for the NNPP during the 2023 presidential and governorship elections, across the country.

However, reacting to the report, the chairman of the NNPP stated that the EFCC had not issued an invitation to Kwankwaso nor initiated any criminal investigation against him.

According to him, those peddling the rumours want to dent the reputation and image of Kwankwaso, who had held several political offices and has not been tried nor convicted of any crimes.

Dungurawa said: “The report that EFCC is probing Sen. Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso is a mere rumour. It is a baseless rumour.

“We have been seeing this kind of rumour several times on different occasions.

“Whoever is circulating that rumour, …the rumour came from an enemy, shared by ignorance and accepted by a fool.

“But thank God that we are not all that three. We are his lovers, we are not ignorant of his doing and we are not a fool. All we can say is let them continue with the rumour, whether they like it or not, Kwankwaso remains the only person with integrity, respect, popularity and capacity who can govern this country.

“All these are coming from our opposition and those against his candidature to become President. And all these will not stop his destiny. But they should be mindful that rumour doesn’t add any value, instead it will generate popularity for him.

“So, there was nothing like allegation on fraud, misconduct, misappropriation or siphoning of public (party) money.

“Kwankwaso is the most decent politician in this Nigeria because he served as Deputy Speaker, Defence Minister, and Governor peacefully. And there was nowhere they found him wanting.”
