There is palpable tension in Calabar, Cross River State as operatives of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Dragon Squad, and the Department of State Services (DSS), reportedly stormed the state House of Assembly complex earlier today.

The security agents were said to have stormed the Cross River State House of Assembly complex following a drama that occurred after the impeachment of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ekom Ayambem.

The New Diplomat had earlier reported that Ayambem, who represents Ikom 2 State Constituency of Cross River state in the Assembly, was impeached on Wednesday, May 22, by 17 members of the House over allegations of misappropriation of public funds.

The impeachment motion was moved by Hon. Effiom Ekarika representing Calabar South 1 Constituency of Cross River State and seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang representing Bekwarra State Constituency of the state.

After impeaching him, the mace was allegedly taken away by the House members.

Following the drama that broke out during the plenary, NPF and DSS operatives as well as other security agents reportedly stormed the state House of Assembly to restore normalcy.
