Lawmakers of the Cross River State House of Assembly have impeached the Speaker, Rt Hon. Elvert Ekom Ayambem.

The Speaker was impeached on Wednesday, May 22, by 17 members of the Assembly over allegations of misappropriation of funds.

The impeachment motion was moved by Hon. Effiom Ekarika, representing Calabar South I Constituency of Cross River, and seconded by Hon. Omang Charles Omang, representing Bekwarra State Constituency of the state.

The impeachment came after majority of the lawmakers passed a “no-confidence vote” on the Rt. Hon. Ayambem, about 11 months in office.

It would be recalled that Ayambem was elected Speaker of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly in June 2023.

Ayambem represents the Ikom 2 State Constituency in the House of Assembly.
