The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted reports circulating in some media outlets that it released a list of 58 former governors being investigated for alleged corruption involving N2.187 trillion.
In a statement released on Sunday, the anti-graft agency described the report headlined “EFCC Releases Full List of 58 Ex-Governors that Embezzled N2.187 Trillion” as “false and mischievous.”
“The Commission neither issued the said list nor entertained discussions on investigation of ex-governors with any news medium,” the EFCC asserted, labeling the supposed list a “disingenuous fabrication designed to achieve motives known only to the authors.”
Furthermore, the agency urged the public to disregard the report, which it termed as “false and misleading.” It also advised media organizations to cross-check facts related to ongoing investigations with the Commission to avoid misleading the public with inaccurate reports.
The purported list claimed to detail former state governors under EFCC’s radar for alleged embezzlement of public funds amounting to over N2 trillion. However, the Commission has firmly denied the existence or release of any such list.
Some of the governors in the list according to the Vanguard, include former Kogi State Governor, late Abubakar Audu (N10.966 bn), former Governor of Abia State, Theodore Orji and his sons (N551 bn), the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello (N80.2 bn), former Enugu State Governor, Chimaroke Nnamani (N5. 3 bn), his successor, Sullivan Chime (N450 million), the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi (N4bn), his predecessor, Ayo Fayose (N6.9 bn), former Governor of Nasarawa State and the former National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu (N15bn), former Governor of Gombe State, Danjuma Goje (N5bn), former governor of Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko (N15 bn), former governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido (N1.35 bn), former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye (N1. 16 bn) and former governor of Bayelsa State Timipre Sylva (N19.2 bn).
Also, former governor of Jigawa state, Ibrahim Saminu Turaki (N36bn), former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu (N7. 6bn), former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle (N70 bn), former governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion (N4. 5 bn), former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso (N10bn), former governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili (N1000 bn), former governor of Taraba state, Jolly Nyame (N1.64 bn), former governor of Adamawa State, Bala James Ngilari (N167 m), former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari (N84 bn), former governor of Akwa Ibom State and the current President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio (N100bn), the immediate past Governor of Kwara State, Abdul fatah Ahmed (N9 bn), former Governor of Borno State, Ali Mode-Sheriff (N300bn), the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano (N43 bn), the immediate past Governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo (N1. 3bn), the immediate past Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku (N39bn) and former Governor of Kaduna State, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero (N700m).
