England international and Manchester City midfielder, Phil Foden, has said that Sunday’s Manchester derby victory over rival Manchester United means everything to the club and the fans in particular.

Foden bagged a brace in the 3-1 win against Man United in the 56th and 80th minutes before striker Erling Haaland sealed the victory in the 91st minute in Sunday’s fixture of the English Premier League.

However, it was United that first found the back of the net courtesy of Marcus Rashford’s 8th-minute strike, but the Erik ten Hag boys could not withstand the superiority of City, conceding three goals in the second half of the game.

Foden, a Manchester City academy graduate, has now scored 11 league goals of the campaign.

The 23-year-old, who has progressed through the club’s ranks, emphasized the significance of defeating Man United for both himself and all the club’s supporters.

He said, “I understand what it means for the fans in the derby at the Etihad. It means everything.

“To score as well is even better but it was about the win today.

“That’s my aim. To turn up in the big games, that’s what I want to do and I think this season I’m proving that by putting performances like that in. So yeah I’ll keep working hard.”

Foden was voted Player of the Match following his brace, making 116 touches, and completing 83 passes in a brilliant performance. The midfielder credited Pep Guardiola’s tactical decisions, particularly for the crucial go-ahead goal scored with ten minutes remaining.

“Yeah the manager said switch sides with Bernardo,” he said.

“I switched and not long after I managed to score the second goal.

“The manager knows best and I listened to him and it paid off in the end.”

Sunday’s win for City sees them trailing league leaders Liverpool, whom they will face at Anfield next weekend, by one point.
