Nigeria’s former President and Leader of the West African Elders Forum, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Friday, met with Liberia’s outgoing President, George Weah and the President-elect, Joseph Boakai, as they begin a peaceful power transition.

Jonathan on X platform shared pictures of Weah and Boakai during his visit.

In his words: “In continuation of the West African Elders Forum Election Mediation Mission to Liberia’s last general elections, I returned to Monrovia today to meet with His Excellency President George Weah and the President-Elect, His Excellency Joseph Boakai, as they begin processes for a peaceful power transition.

“My consultations with both of them were quite reassuring. I am pleased with their sense of cooperation, purpose and patriotism as well as their determination to rally all Liberians to work for the unity, peace and progress of the country.

“I believe all of West Africa has something to learn from Liberia’s elections, especially with President Weah’s selflessness in calling to concede and congratulate the President-Elect and the demonstrated commitment of all stakeholders to put the interest of the country above personal or party considerations.”

It would be recalled that Weah last Friday conceded election defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai after a tight race, Boakai, 78, a former vice president who lost to Weah in the 2017 election, led with 50.9% of the vote over Weah’s 49.1%, with nearly all the votes counted by the country’s elections commission.
