Ousted Niger leader, Mohamed Bazoum, will file a legal suit against the military officers involved in the July 26 successful coup d’état.
This was communicated by his lawyers on Monday.
According to AFP, the suit is aimed at General Abdourahamane Tiani who orchestrated the coup and “all others”.
Lawyers to the ousted president said the action of General Tiani against Bazoum is against the state.
“An attack and conspiracy against state authority, crimes and offences committed by civil servants and arbitrary arrests and confinements,” the lawyers noted.
The suit is expected to be filed in the coming days with a court in the capital Niamey, one of the lawyers, Dominique Inchauspe, told the outlet.
Also, the lawyers said they will appeal to two organs of the United Nations, UN, Human Rights Council including its working group on unlawful detention of its client, Bazoum.
The coup, according to Inchauspe, was “an infringement on the dignity of the Nigerien state” and reaffirmed the “absolute necessity” to restore the rule of law.
Prior to Monday’s notice, Bazoum had filed a lawsuit with a court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on September 18, his Senegalese lawyer Seydou Diagne has said.
It would be recalled that Bazoum, a democratically elected president was overthrown from office by the presidential guards in the country.
Meanwhile, Bazoum has been held in his residence since the coup.
On August 13, the coup leaders said they would prosecute Bazoum for “high treason”.
