For the first time since it failed to capture power in the February 25 presidential election, the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will converge at its National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Members of the BoT headed by the former Senate President, Adolphus Nduneweh Wabara, are expected to discuss the state of the nation and the position of the party.
The party’s former governors, ministers, national chairmen and secretaries among others are expected at the meeting.
TheNewDiplomat gathered that the party’s former BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin; his successor, Adolphus Wabara; former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi; Senator Ben Obi, and former Minister of Special Duties, Saminu Turaki (SAN), have arrived at the secretariat for Thursday’s crucial meeting.
This is perhaps the first of its kind after the 2023 general elections.
It would be recalled that the PDP at the last presidential election polled 6,984,520 votes to trail behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 8,794,726 votes.
It is expected that today’s meeting will also focus on the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) where the party lost its challenge against the APC.
There is also the possibility of the BoT discussing the migration of some key members of the party particularly the former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who is currently serving in the APC as one of the ministers of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Another agenda for discussion by the BoT is the off-cycle elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States scheduled for November 11, 2023, the chances of their candidates.
The PDP is perceived as a strong opposition party and it would interest members of the public to know the position of the party as regards the current situation in the country under the administration of President Tinubu.
