Weeks after he ordered the suspension and investigation of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday explained why it was necessary to interrogate the man’s tenure at the Apex bank.

Speaking during a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Paris, France, organised on the sidelines of his visit to the French capital for the New Global Financing Pact Summit, President Tinubu said Emefiele made a mess of the nations financial sector.

According to the President, Nigeria’s financial system under the leadership of Governor Emefiele was rotten, with many Nigerians outside the country left in difficult straits, unable to remit funds through the banking sector.

Recall that the President had suspended the CBN governor and ordered a probe of his office and Mr Emefiele was subsequently arrested and ferried from Lagos to Abuja where he has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services.

According to Tinubu, the plight of many Nigerians in diaspora who were unable to do any meaningful financial transactions was the result of multiple exchange rates, which has now become a thing of the past.

“Then the financial system was rotten. Few people making bags of our money and then you yourself, you stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone,” he said.

Answering questions on Emefiele, the President said, “The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that, they will sort themselves out.”
