The Kano State Government has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew just as residents trooped out enmasse to celebrate the victory of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Saturday’s Governorship and State Assembly elections.

NNPP candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf caused a big upset in Kano as he polled 1,019,602 while the candidate of the ruling APC, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna polled – 890,705 to come second, according to results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The dawn-to-dusk curfew is said to avoid the breakdown of law and order following tensions generated from the collation of results. However, the decision has sparked tension as Kano residents ignored the curfew to celebrate NNPP’s victory.

The state commissioner for information and internal affairs, Muhammad Garba, who made the announcement in a statement on Monday morning said the decision was to prevent hoodlums from causing chaos in the already tense situation.

The curfew was announced minutes after the declaration of NNPP’s Yusuf, heavily backed by the party’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso as the winner of Kano governorship election, beating the ruling APC to the seat.

This also comes as some political thugs were reported to have set the residence of ace Kano singer, Dauda Kahutu Rarara on fire.

Rara was a regular at the APC campaigns as he sang at various rallies held by the party in the state and in other parts of the north.
