Few days to the February 25 general election, the senatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Enugu East, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, has been assassinated.

It was gathered that the incident happened at Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.

A source who spoke with newsmen said the armed men also murdered five supporters who were with him inside his car.

The source said: “They have assassinated Oyibo Chukwu! He was killed inside his campaign vehicle, a Sienna bus.

“We finished Campaign in parts of Nkanu West and the assailants trailed him as he was heading home and attacked him and killed him.”

Also, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, has confirmed the unfortunate incident.

“It is true that our senatorial candidate for Enugu East senatorial district for Saturday’s election has been killed. They (gunmen) shot him and five others and set them ablaze.

“Our party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties that felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state and are afraid they may lose the Saturday’s election.”
