- Three Banks Set Ablaze
The violent protest against the new naira notes which erupted in the early hours of Friday in some communities in Lagos, yesterday, dovetailed to Sagamu, a suburb of Ogun State as 30 persons suspected to be some of the protesters are currently in police custody.
The state Police Commissioner, Frank Mba who made this disclosure during raid on the masquerading protesters, said that three commercial banks were set ablaze.
He said that deliberate attempts were made by the miscreants to break into the vaults and bunk room of the bank, adding that their efforts became futile following the police prompt response.
The Commissioner, however, assured residents of the area of adequate security, and warned miscreants to desist from further engaging in destruction of properties.
An eye witness account, said that trouble started when the Automated Teller Machines otherwise known as ATM located in some banks failed to dispense money.
Angered by the development, some dissidents comprising youths started throwing stones at the bank premises.
According to the eye witness account, what started as mere skirmish, later escalated to unimaginable proportion as customers at the banks replicated the same action.
” Before I could say, “Jack Rubbinson”, the entire community was on fire as people scampered to safety,” said the eye witness.
Mba listed the banks affected by the Sagamu uprising to include Keystone, Union and Access Banks.
