The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has Explained why the former aide to ex-President and immediate past Director-General of Labour Party, (LP) Doyin Okupe was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos in the early hours of Thursday.

EFCC Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, on Thursday, in Abuja, said the Commission issued the watch-list request on 18th July, 2016 over six years before Okupe’s recent conviction on money laundering charges by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In his words, “Concerning the interception of Doyin Okupe, the DSS, today, January 12, informed the Commission of the interception of Dr. Okupe, former presidential adviser at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

“The Service acted on a watchlist request issued on 18th July, 2016, over six years before his recent conviction on money laundering charges by the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“The Commission was in the process of formally lifting the watch list before his interception, and will expedite action in this regard.”

It would be recalled that Dr. Okupe in a tweet on his twitter handle, said he was arrested at MMIA on his way to the United Kingdom for medicals.

His tweet reads, “I was arrested and detained @ the MMIA, Lagos this morning, 12th Jan on my way to the UK for medicals; years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC, Abuja.

“I just left the EFCC office where Snr Officers in Lagos & Abuja apologised to me for the error. OCCUPATIONAL HAZZARD abi?”
