The Director-General of the 2023 presidential campaign of the Labour party, (LP) Doyin Okupe, has resigned.
Okupe, also a former presidential media aide, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the party’s flag bearer, Peter Obi, dated 20th, December, 2022.
The letter reads, “Dear Peter, you will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same,” the letter read in part.
“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.
“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions. God bless you and family.”
This development comes hours after Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Monday, found him guilty of receiving over N200 million cash from former National Security Adviser (NSA). Col. Sambo Dasuki.
Recall that Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, in a judgment, had found Okupe guilty in 26 out of the 59 counts preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The judge, however, gave an option of N500,000 in each of the counts, amounting to N13 million, which the court ruled must be paid before 4:30pm, Monday.
However, Okupe met the deadline for the payment of the N13 million fine to avoid the 2-year jail term he bagged over the N200 million money laundering offence.
