The Oxbridge Magistrate Court in United Kingdom (UK) has ordered that former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice remain in custody of the British government pending the determination of court hearing over the case bordering on alleged human trafficking against them.
The couple, on Thursday appeared before the court over allegations that they conspired to traffic an underage person identified as David Ukpo into the UK for the purpose of tricking him to donate his kidney to the Senator’s daughter.
The duo had come under fire since last week when the UK police arrested and detained them.
At the commencement of court hearing, the prosecutor had told the court that the lawmaker brought a 15-year-old boy from Nigeria to the UK with the claim that he was to be given a better life but was actually to harvest his organ to treat their daughter who is suffering from kidney disease.
Ekweremadu was remanded in custody as the court argued that he is an influential person, a flight risk and the case involves a child and modern slavery.
The case was subsequently adjourned to July 7 at Westminster Magistrate Court to enable the UK Attorney General, Suella Braverman, to determine whether the case will be tried in the country or Nigeria.
There have been several revelations since the matter became public knowledge as the Nigerian Immigration Service recently came out to say the boy in question was 21 and not 15 as claimed.
