Worried by the series of killings of young men in Sapele, Delta State by unknown gunmen, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the town, Mr. Harrison Nwabuisi, has scheduled a town hall meeting for tomorrow, Saturday, June 4.

Within a space of two weeks, over five persons have been gunned down in Sapele by rampaging armed gangs.

The latest unresolved murder took place Wednesday, June 1 at a mechanic workshop along New Ogorode road, near Oghenetega Baptist Church.

A mechanic popularly called “Shagari” was accosted at his workshop and gunned down at close range at about 5 pm in the evening by assailants zoomed off after carrying out their hideous act.

Two youths were also killed recently along Laboard and Otomewo road, acts which the police are yet to arrest any suspect.

Some crime watchers, trying to figure out the reasons for the series of fatal shootings in the town noted that the killings is most likely either a fight over turf by rival cult gangs or local scammers popularly referred to as Yahoo boys.

A source close to the local police boss disclosed that at tomorrow’s town hall meeting, youths and other stakeholders will be given ample opportunity to air their grievances and proffer a way out of the series of unresolved killings which is threatening to turn Sapele metropolis to panic city.

Nwanbuisi said he has been assured by the Commandant of the Sapele Area Police Command and other relevant security agencies in the town that they will be at the meeting which has as it theme “Community Safety Partnership”.

He said that he is optimistic that the outcome of the meeting will go a long way in stemming the tide and bring lasting harmony to the hitherto peaceful community.
